Why Microgreens Need Special Care
Microgreens have a short growth cycle (7-14 days) but pack incredible nutrition. Their feeding needs are different from mature plants—less is often more.
The Three-Phase Approach
We recommend dividing the microgreen cycle into three distinct phases, each with different nutrient requirements.
Phase 1: Germination (Days 1-3)
Use plain, pH-balanced water only (6.0-6.5). Seeds contain all the nutrients they need to germinate. Keep the growing medium moist but not waterlogged. Mist 2-3 times daily.
Cover trays with a humidity dome or damp paper towel to maintain consistent moisture during germination.
Phase 2: Early Growth (Days 4-7)
Introduce a very diluted nutrient solution (25% of normal strength, EC 0.4-0.6). Continue daily watering, ensuring good drainage. Remove the humidity dome once most seeds have sprouted.
Phase 3: Pre-Harvest (Days 8-14)
Increase to 50% nutrient strength (EC 0.8-1.0). This final push enhances color, flavor, and nutritional density. Water once daily, allowing slight drying between waterings.
Recommended EC/PPM by Variety
- Sunflower/Pea Shoots: EC 0.6-0.8 (low feeders)
- Radish/Broccoli: EC 0.8-1.0 (medium feeders)
- Basil/Cilantro: EC 1.0-1.2 (heavier feeders)
- Wheatgrass: Plain water only (no nutrients needed)
Over-fertilizing microgreens leads to bitter taste and potential root burn. When in doubt, use less.
Harvest Timing
Harvest when the first true leaves appear, typically 10-14 days after planting. Cut just above the soil line with clean scissors. Rinse gently and enjoy immediately for maximum nutrition.
