Setting Up a Mini Hydro Wall

Complete guide to building your first vertical hydroponic system in any space

Introduction

A mini hydro wall is the perfect way to start your vertical farming journey. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from choosing the right location to harvesting your first crop.

What You'll Need

  • VertiFarm Rack or similar modular system
  • NanoPump V3 or equivalent water pump
  • Growing medium (clay pebbles or rockwool)
  • Nutrient solution (A + B formula)
  • pH testing kit or pHSense Smart
  • LED grow lights (optional for indoor setups)

Step 1: Choose Your Location

Select a spot that receives at least 4-6 hours of indirect light, or plan to use supplemental LED lighting. Ensure the area has access to electricity and is near a water source. Avoid locations with extreme temperature fluctuations.

South-facing windows are ideal for natural light, but any bright area will work with proper LED supplementation.

Step 2: Assemble the Frame

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to assemble your vertical rack. Most modular systems like the VertiFarm Rack require no tools and can be set up in under 30 minutes. Ensure all connections are secure and the frame is level.

Step 3: Set Up the Water System

Install your water pump in the reservoir at the bottom of the system. Connect the tubing to deliver water to the top tier, allowing it to cascade down through each level. Test the flow before adding plants.

Always ensure your pump is fully submerged during operation. Running a pump dry can cause permanent damage.

Step 4: Prepare Your Growing Medium

Rinse clay pebbles or soak rockwool cubes in pH-balanced water (5.5-6.5) before use. This removes dust and prepares the medium to hold moisture and nutrients.

Step 5: Plant and Monitor

Transplant seedlings or place seeds in your growing medium. Set up your nutrient schedule and monitor pH levels daily for the first week, then every 2-3 days once stable. Your first harvest should be ready in 4-6 weeks depending on what you're growing.

Start with fast-growing herbs like basil, mint, or lettuce for quick success and motivation!
